8/24(Sat) Public Seminar “Relationship between Global Warming in the Arctic and Environmental Changes in Siberia

2024/08/27
On Saturday, August 24, a public seminar on global warming and climate change was held at the Hiroshima University Kiteminsai-Lab (Adjacent to Hiroshima Station).
The wide range of participants, from high school students to those over 60 years old, showed interest in climate change.
Associate Professor Masayuki KONDO, director of the Sustainability Division, organized the event and invited three experts in earth science research on Siberia all over Japan.
The first speaker was Professor HIYAMA (Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research, Nagoya University).
He explained the permafrost and “thermokarst,” a change in landscape created by the melting of permafrost ground ice.
The participants seemed to be interested in the graph showing at a glance that the summer precipitation change in Siberia has significantly increased in the 2000s.
The next speaker is Associate Professor KANAMORI (Faculty of Business Administration, Kobe Gakuin University).
He explained climate change with a focus on precipitation.
He said that in the Siberian region, precipitation fluctuates naturally due to the superposition of regular cycles, but that natural variability is also amplified by the effects of fast warming temperature in the Arctic region. Therefore, further research is needed to estimate whether precipitation will increase in the future, along with natural variability.
The last speaker was Taguchi a researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies.
He won the hearts of the participants by introducing himself as a native of Kumamoto Prefecture and the same hometown as Tomonori Maeda, a former popular baseball player in Hiroshima.
He answered a participant's question about “how to reduce global temperatures” from the standpoint of the carbon cycle in his specialty, terrestrial ecosystems.
The seminar was a great success, with many participants staying after the lecture to eagerly ask questions of the lecturer.
