On Saturday, August 24, a public seminar on global warming and climate change was held at the “HU Kiteminsai Lab Lab”.

A wide range of participants, from high school students to those over 60 years old, showed a high level of interest in climate change. Prof. Masayuki Kondo, head of the Sustainability Division, organized the event and invited three experts in earth science research on Siberia to speak.

The first speaker was Prof. Tetsuya Hiyama (Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research, Nagoya University).

He began with a detailed explanation of permafrost, followed by an explanation of “thermokarst,” a change in landscape created by the melting of permafrost ground ice. The participants seemed interested in the graph showing that the change in summer precipitation in Siberia significantly increased in the 2000s.

次の登壇者は金森大成准教授（神戸学院大学　経営学部）です。
「降水量」をテーマに気候変動について解説いただきました。シベリア地域は一定周期の重ね合わせによって降水量がまず自然変動するが、北極域の早いスピードによる温暖化の影響でも自然変動が増幅される、ということと、今後、降水量が増えるかどうかは自然変動と合わせて更なる研究が必要、と解説いただきました。

最後の登壇者は田口研究員です。
 熊本県出身で、元広島東洋カープの選手、前田智徳と同郷であるという自己紹介で参加者の心をつかみました。参加者からの「地球の温度を下げる方法」という質問に専門の陸域生態系における炭素循環の視点から回答いただきました。

セミナー終了後も多くの参加者が残りそれぞれの先生に熱心に質問を投げかける姿が印象的で盛況のうちに終えることができました。
