[Introduction to the Miyajima Garden]

Hiroshima University’s Setouchi CN International Collaborative Research Institute operates the Miyajima Natural Botanical Garden, located on Aki no Miyajima, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Established in 1964 (Shōwa 39), the laboratory spans approximately 10 hectares and serves as a hub for education and research in botany, leveraging the island’s rich natural environment.

At the Miyajima Garden, research is conducted in the fields of plant geography and plant ecology, focusing on speciation, distribution, and ecology. A key feature of the laboratory is its research on plants in island environments.

Additionally, the facility plays a role in the education of students in the Department of Biological Science at Hiroshima University’s Faculty of Science, providing them with opportunities to deepen their knowledge through practical training and research.

The laboratory is also engaged in greening initiatives using regionally adapted plant seedlings.

Furthermore, the Miyajima Garden places great emphasis on collaboration with the local community. Through activities such as plant observation events, public lectures, and the Hiroshima University Digital Museum, the laboratory actively promotes botanical education and outreach.

With the rich natural environment of Miyajima as its backdrop, the laboratory serves as a vital hub for advancing botany and contributing to environmental conservation.
