On January 28, the 2nd Workshop of the Setouchi CNInternational Collaborative Research Center was held at the Mukaishima MarineLaboratory! In the afternoon, a report session for the Integrated Research Support Projects also took place. This article features a summary of the report presented by Professor Shigeki Wada.

Professor Wada addressed topicssuch as:

  • What is blue carbon?
  • What happens to blue carbon as CO₂ levels increase?

Until July 2024, Professor Wada was conducting research at University of Tsukuba. Through the presentation of his survey results from Himeshima, Shikinejima, and Ioto (Sulfur Island), participants learned about the impacts of high CO₂ concentrations on marine ecosystems.

Purpose of the study: To understand how warm-temperatemarine environments respond to elevated CO₂ levels.

An international collaborative survey using the researchvessel Toyoshio-maru is scheduled for September 2025.

His thoughts on research:

“One of the most exciting aspects is that by opening up newsurvey locations, I can collaborate with a wide variety of researchers,”

We’re excited to see where his research takes him next!Checkout Professor Wada’s official Instagram: @bioloceanogrlab– be sure to take a look!
